Student Government Association Senate Meeting Minutes October 23, 2006 I. Call to Order-5:00 PM II. Approval of Minutes a. Minutes Approved III. President’s Report a. Guest i. Chris Punn from the Collegiate Entrepreneurs briefly wanted to touch on an opportunity for an Young Entrepreneur Extravaganza on April 4th which will focus on an opportunity for students to get together for a conference in which there will be workshops, guest speakers, and a possible competition and he is looking for support from SGA b. Advocacy Day i. Discussed under LAC’s Report c. Day of Service i. Discussed under section e d. MLK Speaker i. The speaker is Patricia Russell-McCloud who is the Arthur of the book A is for Attitude, she is being funded through various organizations and now they are looking into a donation from SGA for her visit here 1. They are requesting 500 dollar donation from SGA a. There has been a motion to approve 500 dollars to go towards the MLK day speaker from our Operating account i. Motion Carried e. Community Service October 28th i. Will be on this Saturday from 10-1 and we will be raking leaves for the Elderly and we need roughly 30 volunteers, Martin will send out an e-mail to everyone with more information about the event f. RUCKUS i. SFC has set aside from last year an amount of 10,000 dollars to go towards this legal music downloading service, Martin would like to know if the students would like to go through with it so we need a list of features that we would send out in a bid to obtain a company g. Student Surveys i. We have an agreement with the town to explore businesses and concepts that we would like to see downtown, in the past we have done this by the portal but Martin would like to request a committee to deal with these issues h. Red on Friday i. An idea has been proposed that in order to generate more school spirit and spirit throughout the campus/city wide, everyone would wear red on Friday. i. Budgets i. We need to discuss council budgets and they will meet with Regis after the meeting to discuss preparations for their budgets IV. Executive Vice President a. Spring Banquet i. We will have spring banquet on Tuesday April 24th from 5-7 and it will include inductions of new members b. Forum i. The forum will be on November 14th and it will be on Parking Issues, Jen will have more information in the upcoming week V. Legislative Vice President a. Probation i. We have had a participation problem in the past weeks with office hours and meetings, probation letters are in the mail boxes and the period is 30 days b. College of Arts and Sciences Appointment i. Lee Aldrich, Senior Psychology Major 1. Motion has been made to approve Lee as senator of college of arts and sciences a. Motion Carried VI. Vice President of Student Finance a. Geology Museum i. Dr. Lyndhart was kind enough and wrote SGA a thank you letter for showing our support towards the museum b. SFC i. SFC met with Student Leader Resource Center and in particular Heather Evans, she requested 6400 dollars from SFC Fund Balance Account to pay for necessities in the SLRC office consisting of Poster Makers, Laminator, and an Ellison Machine 1. Motion has been made to approve 6400 dollars from SFC Fund Balance Account to go towards the equipment for the SLRC a. Motion has been approved ii. Margaret Devaney 1. Chair of the Dance Department came to SFC and requested 3155 dollars from their reserve account in order to buy necessary items for their Nutcracker performance a. Motion has been made and carried VII. Senate Report a. College o Information Science and Technology i. ITR Committee Report 1. Talked about security with personal computers and Rochelle thinks it is partly a Res Life issue with doors not being locked but asks for ideas from SGA on how to handle the issue a. Point has been made that most residents aren’t locking their doors correctly which is allowing people to gain access to their rooms ii. Lab Printing Costs 1. Costs might increase so be on the lookout for that iii. Internet Explorer 1. There will be a new version of IE that will be force downloaded on your computer in the next couple weeks and is necessary for clean access to work b. OCSC i. OCSC is asking for volunteers from SGA to help distribute the phone books across campus to students, there will be a sign up sheet at the next meeting c. Freshman Class Senator i. Went to the first year council meeting and they have established that there spring semester meetings will be on wed at 5 o clock and will be in Heth ii. The FYC will be sending out an e-mail to those who applied and were interested so they will be able to have an active council in the Spring VIII. Cabinet/Staff Reports a. Chief of Staff i. Cabinet/Staff Meeting 1. no meeting today because of the social ii. SGA Social 1. social is after the meeting at Mi Puerto iii. Binder 1. Please fill out the binder so Nikole knows what is going on b. Diversity Awareness Coordinator i. UN Day Tomorrow and Wednesday 1. There are a lot of events planned, check the campus wide e-mail for the list of times and events, Omar would like to ask for everyone’s support especially if you can make it to the symposium c. Legislative Action Coordinator i. Legislative Advocacy Trip 1. They are beginning the application progress for the trip, January 31st at 1 and will be getting back February 1st at 6, they are looking at taking 30 people and it is open to SGA and the student body, this year till be a couple of different information and training sessions that you will have to be able to attend IX. Council Reports a. GSC i. They held their student mixer last week and had roughly 100 people in attendance, everything went well and had the president, some vp’s, and their dean in attendance, the event was successful and they are looking forward to many more events X.
