Centennial Service Challenge

Centennial LogoStarting now, through 2010, RU is celebrating our centennial, and focusing on the service we have done the past 100 years and hope to continue for the next 100. Individuals, clubs, and organizations can get involved by doing your service in honor of RU 100!

It's really easy to get involved with the Centennial Service Challenge. Most clubs and organizations are already doing community or global service in some form. So, to get involved in the CSC, keep doing what you're doing, but do it in honor of RU 100.

How?

  1. Complete and submit this form to register your service with SGA. This is your way of telling us you plan on doing this service in the near future. Get in the spirit of RU 100 by having a goal of doing 100 hours, or 100 dollars, or 100 donations, etc.

  2. Download the Centennial signage. Take photos of your club/organization doing service, with one of these signs visible. If you'd rather, you can make your own sign indicating you're doing your service for RU 100. Note: We recommend using a photo release form, especially for those in your photos who are under 18 or disabled.

  3. Complete this form to report the completion of your service. Attach photos, and email to the address listed on the form. SGA is working with the university on a way for everyone's service projects in honor of RU 100 to be displayed online.

  4. Everything you need to get started is on this page! Please email sgaserve@radford.edu if you have questions or need help!

What Do You Want Wednesdays

picture of a golf cartDo you ever get jealous when you see Facilities employees zipping around campus on their golf carts as you trek from Muse to Waldron? Well, envy no more! Every Wednesday from 8:40 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., SGA members will be on a golf cart giving students free rides around campus. All you have to do in exchange is answer a weekly question we'll ask along the way. The question might be about anything from gym hours to budget cuts - anything that affects the student body. We'll be looking for you this Wednesday!

Forums

This month we'll be hosting a Centennial forum to introduce the student body to the service theme of RU's centennial celebration and some of the exciting centennial happenings coming up this year. We will also teach you more about how you or your group can join the Centennial Service Challenge. Check back soon for date and time.

Sustainability

logo from the Radford University's sustainability program Working with the Green Team and RU SustainABILITY, SGA works to educate and promote conservation and sustainability on our campus. In hard economic times like these, each time you turn off the light when you leave your room or shorten your typical shower length, you are saving the money on electricity and water that could go towards academic programs and keeping adjunct faculty on staff. RU’s goal is to reduce our carbon footprint two percent per year over the next 10 years, and SGA wants to support that goal every step of the way. Please visit the RU SustainABILITY website to learn more about how you can help!

Campus, Community, and Global Outreach

Radford students do a LOT of community service. From planting trees to Relay for Life to working with local kids, Radford students are known for caring and lending a helping hand. The theme of our Centennial Celebration is service, and starting now RU is going to try to keep growing the amount of service we do both locally and beyond. We think it would be awesome to figure out how many hours of service all of our student clubs and organizations are doing total – so that we can challenge ourselves to beat that number next year! More information will be coming very soon on how you can add your organization’s service hours to the RU service tally.

Spread the Red

Last year we figured out how to make other schools’ teams Dread the Red. This year, let’s Spread the Red! The school bookstore and local stores are carrying more Radford gear than ever, and we want to try to fill our campus with red. Make sure to let us know if YOU have any ideas for merchandise you’d like to see in the bookstore. One thing we’re thinking about is a t-shirt bonfire where everyone who throws another school’s t-shirt into the fire will get a free RU t-shirt.

Cooperation and Diversity Promotion

picture of a group of students in Washington DC The Radford student body is composed of many diverse groups. This includes the Black Student Affairs Council, the International Student Affairs Council, Spectrum, political groups, religious groups, and more. It is RU’s goal to prepare us for the diverse working world we will become a part of upon graduation. SGA supports this mission and encourages all students to join together to celebrate our uniqueness and differences, and find our common ground and similarities. This year, SGA will be taking a hands-on approach to uniting the campus. This includes helping with events and programming for various clubs and organizations, including both diversity groups and groups that aren’t considered diversity groups (just contact us for help!), as well as promoting the use of the campus-wide events calendar to ensure that two events of interest to the entire campus community are not in conflict with each other. We’d like to see a very diverse group of students at every student activity and event!

Student Finance Committee (SFC) Funding

The SGA VP of Student Finance and other student representatives serve on this committee, along with representatives from Student Affairs. SFC-funded accounts include R-SPaCE, SGA, Campus Recreation, Arts, Sport Club Council, Greek Governing Councils, and Club Programming, among others. What do these student-run organizations have in common? They all provide events and programming potentially of interest to the entire campus community. These groups can get up to $1500 in supplemental funding subject to SFC authorization. Click here for more information.

Q: RU a member?
A: Yes!

If you are a current Radford University student, then you are a member of the Student Government Association. Our student body is governed by students, for students. The university exists for the benefit of students. We deserve to, and do, have influence in university-wide policies and student activity funding.

SGA is the voice of the student body. And we cannot be your voice without your help. So look around our website, get familiar with some of the things we do, and contact us whenever you have questions, ideas, or concerns; need guidance on university procedures; need help with an event; or just want to say hi. All of us working together will make Radford a truly special place and a life-changing experience.

This year SGA endeavors to closely listen to student opinion and be a channel for open communication between students and the administration and faculty. We’re taking a hands-on approach to achieving goals like increasing school spirit, sustainability, diversity awareness, and service on campus. We also sponsor many fun events ranging from Homecoming to the Highlander Olympics. We believe in open access to information, student leadership, integrity, excellence, and constantly bettering RU and the student experience.
